World Lacrosse has officially launched its Olympic qualification process for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. The three-stage system, approved by the International Olympic Committee, will see twelve national teams (six men's and six women's) compete in Los Angeles. The World Lacrosse Sixes Championships will be central to the qualification, with continental championships in 2026 leading up to the 2027 Sixes Championships. A final qualifying tournament in early 2028 will determine the last remaining spots.

World Lacrosse (138) held its 2025 General Assembly virtually, with delegates from 95 National Federations. Key decisions included changes to the constitution and bylaws, and team caps at various World Championships. Sallie Barker was re-elected to the board, and Rick Mercurio joined. The assembly also approved the 2026-27 budget and discussed the 2025-28 strategic plan. The updates include streamlining the board structure, updating the rules change process, and making future General Assemblies virtual.

Spain will host the 2026 European Sixes Lacrosse Championships in Salou, a qualifying event for the 2027 World Lacrosse Sixes Championships. The event will take place from November 2-9, 2026 for women and the following eight days for men. The World Championships will serve as a pathway to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, pending IOC approval. The Asia-Pacific Championships will also be held in October 2026 in Australia.

World Lacrosse is prioritizing the Sixes format to bolster international growth and secure its place in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. Recent events like the Atlas Cup in the USA and the Super Sixes in Canada, along with upcoming tournaments in Saudi Arabia and Hong Kong, demonstrate this strategic focus. The Sixes format was also featured at The World Games 2025 in Chengdu, where the United States won gold, and will be central to the 2026 Asia-Pacific Sixes Championship in Sunshine Coast, Australia. These tournaments are key to refining the rules and competition structure, aiming for a sustainable Olympic model. Canada won the U20 Men’s World Championship in Korea, beating the United States 6-5, further highlighting the sport's growing competitiveness.

Ingmar De Vos will chair his first ASOIF General Assembly on June 11 in Lausanne, featuring elections for four council members from seven candidates and discussions on ASOIF's strategic direction and governance. The assembly will also consider World Boxing's application for ASOIF associate membership and receive updates from the IOC, LA28, Brisbane 2032, Dakar 2026, WADA, and ITA. De Vos, who succeeded Francesco Ricci Bitti, aims to strengthen collaboration within the Olympic Movement.
