The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) has congratulated Asian athletes and National Olympic Committees (NOCs) for their significant contributions to the success of the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics. The OCA highlighted Asia's growing presence in winter sports, noting both medal-winning performances and the participation of NOCs traditionally not known for these sports. The Harbin Asian Winter Games in 2025 were cited as valuable preparation. Japan, China, Korea, and Kazakhstan all achieved notable results, with Japan finishing 10th overall and Kazakhstan celebrating a gold medal in figure skating. The OCA anticipates continued growth in Asian winter sports leading up to the 2029 Asian Winter Games in Almaty.

This move highlights the OCA's agility and Kazakhstan's established winter sports infrastructure and experience. Concerns surrounding Saudi Arabia's economic stability and the logistical challenges of building a winter sports complex in the desert likely contributed to the withdrawal, with reports of increasing public debt and potential bankruptcy scenarios fueling speculation.
