Jeonbuk Province, selected as the domestic candidate city for the 2036 Summer Olympics, is preparing for the bid. After being chosen over Seoul on February 28, 2025 by the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee, Jeonbuk is preparing to submit a proposal to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and has commissioned a feasibility study from the Korea Institute of Sport Science. Seung Min RYU and Governor Kim Kwang-young visited the IOC headquarters in Lausanne in April to discuss the bid with Thomas BACH and Kirsty COVENTRY. The Korean Sport & Olympic Committee has held two video conferences with the IOC Future Host Commission. The final decision is pending domestic procedures and international competition from countries including India, Indonesia, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey.

Seung Min Ryu, President of the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee, met Yao Ming, former NBA star and President of the Chinese Basketball Association, at the 45th Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) General Assembly in Kuwait City. Both attended as key figures representing Asian sports. Thomas Bach, President of the International Olympic Committee, and Kirsty Coventry, newly elected IOC Member, also participated in the General Assembly. Seung Min Ryu, as the KOC representative and Coordination Committee member for the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, and Yao Ming, as a special speaker, shared their insights. They both competed at the 2002 Busan Asian Games, 2000 Sydney, 2004 Athens, and 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Korean Sport & Olympic Committee (KSOC) President Seung Min RYU will attend the 45th Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) General Assembly in Kuwait City from May 10-14. This marks his first attendance since his inauguration as president. The assembly will also be attended by Kirsty Coventry, the newly elected IOC Member, and Thomas BACH. RYU previously served as the OCA Athletes Relations Committee Chairman and Executive Board Member from 2019 and attended the Harbin Winter Asian Games at the invitation of the OCA after being elected as KSOC president.

Kim Kwan-young, the Governor of Jeonbuk Special Autonomous Province, has initiated a full-scale sports diplomacy effort to host the 2036 Summer Olympics. On April 8, 2025, Kim will meet with International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas BACH and IOC Future Host Commission Chair Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović in Lausanne, Switzerland. The delegation includes Seung Min RYU, President of the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee, along with six committee members, and four officials from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, including Myung Soo-hyun. Kim plans to emphasize Jeonbuk's strategies, including sustainability, legacy, social solidarity, existing infrastructure utilization, regional cooperation, and a RE100-based carbon-neutral event.
